Bully Tactics and Techniques

Character assassination
This is one of the bullies' most important techniques. They demonize their victims. Everyone they attack "deserves" it. Their victims are always pedophiles, perverts, netcops, nazis, snitches, whatever tag they think they can make stick. (Actually, they do this whether they think it will stick or not.) Then they pound their victims again and again. It doesn't matter if their accusations are not true. It is the value of repetition, and time and again, this technique works in some people's eyes. And once a victim is on their list, they will attack relentlessly.

Moral authority
This is a very important characteristic of our cyberbullies. Their attacks are always depicted as crusades against some evil, righting some perceived slight. How they expect readers of the group to swallow their outrageous lies, I don't know, but bullies' claims to moral authority are definitely typical behavior.

Massive Crossposting
As bullies decide to take over a newsgroup, they will usually add this new target group to a list of five or six other newsgroups where they are already attempting (or succeeding) to exert control. Their disruptions have more effect when they can have the majority of postings in several groups, rather than just one or two.

Nymshifting and Socks
Many to most people who want some measure of sanity in their chosen newsgroups will start killfiling the troublemakers. The trolls and bullies understand this, so they constantly change their posting pseudonyms (nyms) to avoid killfilters. This ain't free speech, it is forced listening. It is another tactic used by trolls who have reached the far edge or who have fully crossed over to being bullies. A sock puppet is an alter ego who agrees with the original poster. In fact, it is the original poster. By using socks, the bullies increase their apparent numbers and make it look like a whole bunch of people agree with them, when in fact it may be just one or two people.

Anonymous posting
A must for the dedicated bully. A simple troll will often not bother, but a bully knows that he will generate a huge amount of animosity. He knows that unless he hides behind an ISP/NSP that will protect him and his real identity, someone is going to find him and pound him. In many cases, particularly when he is exhibiting especially outrageous behavior, the bully will use anonymous remailers or chained open proxies to absolutely obscure his actual origin. This

Coordination of attacks
It is clear that there are groups of bullies that work together as terrorists on Usenet. Sometimes this is a false impression created by the use of socks (see above), but small groups of bullies often operate in coordination like a small street gang. Having more than one person allows more posts, more control, and the bullies can all share the credit.

Flawed Logic

The following 42 logical fallacies point to The Nizkor Project (this section © Copyright 1995 Michael C. Labossiere), but there are many others. Just do a Google search for "logical fallacies". You will recognize many, many of these logical fallacies as techniques used by the bullies in your group. They use them because they work. It's another form of the Big Lie, and this false logic will be used over and over, because it sounds true.
